The idea of arranging to have lunch with family and friends (all at the same time) on the same day of each year was started by Gillian Lloyd in 2002 and quickly became popular. Each year approximately 1,000 people will join a BIO event; enjoying each other’s company and of course raising valuable funds for charity.

Originally the idea for By Invitation Only lunch was to meet up with family and friends however, the idea soon developed into what BIO lunches stand for today: Friendship, Information, Support and Raising Money for Charity.

The first lunch raised an amazing £1,100. This figure has grown considerably over the years and the total raised to date will be shown on our home page.

As the numbers attending the founding BIO lunch increased, the idea for ‘BIO Satellites’ developed. Several guests from the founding lunch have now started their own lunches, each growing their BIO Satellite with their circle of family and friends. Currently there are eight Satellite lunches – all focusing on retaining friendships and of course raising money for their chosen charity.

The first By Invitation Only lunch raised money for Cancer Research UK particularly for research into breast cancer. The money raised by the founding lunch still remains committed to donating its funds CRUK in this way. However, as each Satellite develops, the organisers of each Satellite are able to choose the charity they wish to support. The first ten years of BIO have 100% supported Cancer Charities however, from 2012 BIO will widen its fundraising scope to include The MS Society with the likelihood of a new BIO satellite raising money for Alzheimer’s Society currently being discussed.

Charities currently being supported by ‘By Invitation Only’ are:

  • Cancer Research UK
  • Breast Cancer Care
  • Teenage Cancer Trust
  • Jersey Hospice Care
  • Princess Royal Breast Cancer Unit
  • CLIC Sargent
  • MS Society

The success of ‘By Invitation Only’ has been overwhelming and it is hoped that this success will continue and keep growing for years to come. If you are interested in joining one of our lunches or even starting your own then please contact Gillian Lloyd
